One day, on a boat trip, Boya played a tune he had composed before he became famous, but unfortunately no one could understand it, which expressed the high mountains and flowing water. At that moment a woodcutter passing by on the shore listened to it and said exactly what the tune meant. Boya said excitedly："You're the one who truly understands my music！"and this woodcutter was Zhong Ziqi.
They talked about music very happily and agreed to visit Ziqi again when Boya returned from his trip.When Boya came back, he had already passed away due to illness. Boya was so sad that he broke his Guqin in front of Ziqi's tomb. Boya believed there was no one left in the world who could truly appreciate his music. After that, he never played the Guqin again.
Because of this legend, people call those who truly understand them “kindred spirits” in China and use the phrase “high mountains and flowing water” to describe the rarity of finding such a soulmate or the sublime beauty of a melody.
